Djouce Woods and Powerscourt Demesne
The route follows well laid out walking trails through Djouce Woods which used to be part of the Powerscourt Demesne. When the trail reaches the moorland, a large area opens up stretching toward the mountains. From there, there are stunning views over the Wicklow Mountains and the sea. At the end of the summer, when the heather is in full bloom, the moorland is like a purple carpet.
From the trails in Djouce Wood, there are lovely glimpses over Powerscourt Waterfall. The long white streak of the waterfall can be seen in the distance tumbling over the edge of a near vertical cliff. Surprisingly, the thundering of the water hitting the rocks does not disturb the silence of the valley. This majestic waterfall is the highest waterfall in Ireland and united Kingdom.
At the heart of Djouce Woods, there is a quiet pond shaded by old oaks and beeches. it used to be a deep gulley, until it was dammed in the 19th century. Originally, it was larger and deeper but during a storm, the dam burst. As it has not been fully restored, the pond has never regained its original size. This is a peaceful haven where deer come to in the evening for a drink of water.
