Djouce Woods walks
Djouce Woods are only a short distance away from Powerscourt House and they used to belong to Powerscourt Demesne. In the 19th century, the 7th Viscount of Powerscourt had new trails built in Djouce Woods to bring his guests on scenic drives. They could then enjoy the beautiful views over the waterfall and the valley. These historical trails are still in use and on Djouce Woods walks, we follow some of these lovely routes, taking time to enjoy the views and the forest’s peace and quiet.
Half way through Djouce Woods walks, we reach Paddock Ponds. They used to be a popular destination for Powerscourt guests and pick nicks were organised on their shores. The ponds were created by damning the stream but there is far less water since the damn was damaged in a storm. We can still enjoy their charm and the tranquility of the valley. Sometimes, we can glimpse shy deer coming down to the shore to drink.
After leaving the forest, Djouce Woods walks lead to the moorland at the foot of the mountains. They follow a lovely trail up along the forest with beautiful views opening up over the Wicklow mountains and the sea in the distance. When the heather is in bloom in the summer, the moorland turns purple with yellow patches from the gorse flowers.
